Significance of Atlanta
Atlanta has a reputation as the “city in a forest” or “city of trees” due to its abundance of trees. About 48% of the metro-Atlanta area is covered in trees. Trees Atlanta is one of the main organizations responsible for the upkeep of Atlanta’s reputation as a city where a wide variety of trees flourish.
The non-profit organization has hundreds of volunteers who work to preserve and plant trees. It also receives support from the city’s government. TreesAtlanta has worked with the municipal government to create legislation to protect land and trees from being cut down as well as created Atlanta’s Tree Ordinance. Atlanta’s Tree Ordinance established standards for preserving historic and landmark trees and covers fines for individuals and companies that unlawfully cut down trees in the metro Atlanta area.

Champion Tree
A "champion tree" is one of the largest, oldest, or most profound individuals of a tree species. The National Register of Champion Trees is a list of the largest tree specimens found in the United States. Listed trees are called National Champions. These trees are reported to American Forests, a non-profit conservation organization dedicated to protecting and restoring healthy forest ecosystems.
The National Register of Champion Trees has been maintained by American Forests since 1940, and the current list reports over 750. Finding champion trees is not only reserved for just arboreal experts; everyone is invited to locate and nominate potential champions, and it’s recommended to find city or state tree organizations for help.
